CHANNEL EXTENSION APPLICATIONS

With the introduction of 18 track tape technology and
automated cartridge
subsystems, the data processing user can achieve near-DASD performance
at a fraction of the cost. Today, customers have the ability to assign
data and applications to devices that offer significant improvement
over
9 and 18 track manual tape as well as offering a storage solution for
critical
data sets that are created and subsequently stored in the same
environment.
Since the placement of critical data sets is a key aspect of disaster
recovery,
the ability of MGT's PIXNET-XL product family to provide connection
between
the CPU and remote automated cartridge subsystem offers the customer an
attractive solution to disaster recovery.
Advantages of Channel Extension
Building on a technological foundation established in 1975, MGT has
refined the sophisticated channel/device emulation technology which
supports
high performance devices. We have extended our technology to include
the

Benefits of Remote Tape Subsystems
The extended capabilities of the PIXNET-XL product family allow the
customer to extend the darkened data center or "lights out" operation
to
remote locations any distance from the CPU. At the remote site, tapes
can
be created and vaulted automatically without human intervention. The
benefits
to a customer when remoting a tape library are significant:

The elimination of human error associated with lost tapes from manual
offsite
vaulting.
- The reduction in time and people
resources involved in retrieving critical
files.
- The ability to share cartridge tape
subsystems between multiple CPUs with
no distance limitation.
- The added security of maintaining and
controlling a remote vault site with
the level of redundancy required by the customer's business.
Under normal operating conditions, the remote automated cartridge
subsystem
serves as another level of data storage hierarchy which appears as a
local,
channel attached device to the operating system.
Continuous Data Availability
In the event of a geographically catastrophic disaster, the disaster
recovery vendor of choice may not be able to accommodate the
subscription
base in a timely fashion. With PIXNET-XL channel connectivity units,
offsite
automated cartridge subsystems located hundreds or even thousands of
miles
away could provide access to the data necessary to restore critical
on-line
applications to host processors in multiple locations. The resulting
reduction
in time and resources could provide substantial cost savings to the
corporation
(see diagram which follows).

PIXNET-XL nodes allow immediate access to data at the
vault site.
