Disaster Recovery

A comprehensive disaster recovery plan is a critical requirement for today's business. Federal legislation as well as corporations are mandating viable, tested contingency plans to insure the continuation of critical business functions. The survival of a business may depend on how well it can recover from any crisis. A crisis may range from the failure of a specific hardware component in a data center to a public relations emergency that demands immediate supplemental backup facilities.

Whatever the disaster recovery planning effort in an organization is called - business resumption or crisis management, the keys to a successful plan must include: Efficient recovery of critical databases, flexible communication facilities, and access to a backup data center whether it be a commercial hotsite or owned by the company.

With multiple subscribers to hotsite centers, in the event of a major disaster, the backup plan must be distance insensitive - able to operate from any available backup location in the world.

The disaster recovery plan must also be cost effective - like an insurance policy and should have been in place yesterday. The modular design of PIXNET-XL channel connectivity products offers a flexible approach to disaster recovery by providing a changeable solution to a business's ever changing needs.

Channel Extension can complement disaster recovery planning in a number of important ways. PIXNET-XL can provide for recovery of critical data via electronic tape vaulting. This function supports remote offsite tape storage/retrieval using IBM "3480", "3490", cartridge tape or StorageTek Automated Cartridge Subsystems (see diagram which follows).

Critical data may also be protected using PIXNET-XL's host-to-host communications. Mirror image databases may be created as protection from disaster. Critical data may be sent to a backup data center either through bulk file transfer or real time transaction journaling. These options utilize PIXNET-XL's host-to-host offerings which include (CTCA) Channel to Channel Emulation and XL/XPRESS for even higher throughput (see diagram which follows). Channel Extension may also complement disaster recovery plans by providing backup solutions for channel extended users as well as locally attached users. The PIXNET-XL family can help recover users at the end of a PIXNET-XL channel extension link in case of a communications link failure, CPU failure or total data center disaster. A hotsite, equipped with PIXNET-XL nodes may utilize economic dial or switched digital connections to continue to support channel extended users with an acceptable level of performance (see diagram which follows). The PIXNET-XL family's unique channel/device emulation technology allows companies to backup users from any hotsite location regardless of distance. This includes the ability to use satellite as the primary or backup communications facility for most applications.

Channel attached users and limited distance users who may be extended over fiber (fiber channel extenders) must also be considered in a disaster/recovery plan. The PIXNET-XL product family offers significant advantages to these users.
Channel attached users need access to a backup site in case of CPU failure. These users may be connected via a channel switch

over a PIXNET-XL link to the disaster recovery site. Local users can continue to enjoy "local" performance from their backup host (see diagram which follows).

Users who are connected to the primary data center via fiber extenders need a backup plan too. A wide-area channel extension solution such as PIXNET-XL provides an excellent, flexible solution for these users.
